What is aerial mast photography?
Aerial mast photography is often referred to as elevated photography, ground-based, low-level and pole photography. Pictures taken from an aerial photography mast system produce an image from a "bird's eye view" perspective.
How does aerial mast photography work?
All aerial mast photography systems contain four key components: a telescopic mast, a digital camera, a remote control pan & tilt unit and a ground control unit.
Telescopic Masts
Telescopic masts for this application are typically either push up or pneumatic masts. Push up masts are raised manually by pushing each section of the mast up and locking in place with a clamp. Pneumatic masts are raised by low pressure air from a compressor or hand pump. The masts come in various sizes ranging from 7 meters to over 30 meters.
A "bird's eye view" represented picture is typically achieved at mast heights of between 10 and 15 meters.
Digital Camera & Ground Control Unit
The digital cameras used for aerial mast photography are typically high resolution and enable live preview and remote capture. Camera functions such as zoom and trigger are controlled by the Ground Control unit, usually a laptop computer. The laptop enables the operator to see exactly what the camera sees in real time, so allows for accurate picture composition before taking the photograph. |
